Spurtle, porridge stirrer

Timber spurtle or porridge stirrer, a traditional Scottish kitchen tool for stirring oats in a saucepan on the stove. A spurtle is a traditional utensil for making smooth, creamy porridge. The narrow, tapered shaft allows a whisking action without spilling porridge out of the saucepan, while the beaded foot is designed to prevent cooked oats sticking to the bottom of the pan. Made at Creamore Mill, Shropshire, England.
